Summary/Overview:

This document stems from research conducted on behalf of the Electoral Commission by academics from Harvard and Birkbeck college, London. It aims to consider the extent and nature of men and women’s participation in politics. As well as providing a literature review, it also presents survey data relating to gender and political participation.

Topics covered in the report include: the propensity of men and women to vote in local and national elections, to contact a politician and join a political party; as well as their propensity to participate in cause-orientated activities such as demonstrating or signing a petition, and civic-orientated activities such as joining a voluntary association.

The document uses extremely clear presentation and language throughout. Statistics are clear and well-presented; a number of useful case-studies are also provided.
