Summary/Overview:
This is document sets out the basic principles for conducting effective Government consultations. It is a code of practice aimed at government departments.
The document itself provides clear guidelines to carrying out successful and dutiful consultations. Despite its governmental focus, the guidance can also be useful in other consultation environments, and the clarity of language makes it easy to adapt the principles of the code to other sectors.
The document is available as a webpage or a pdf. By its nature as a code of practice, there is little detailed discussion, or further information provided within the document – the code is intended to be used in conjunction with the ‘Compact website’: www.thecompact.org.uk
The Code of Practice promotes six key criteria for public consultations, including allowing enough time for responses and ensuring clarity in written material.
