Summary/Overview:

Patient Opinion is a social enterprise that provides an online space in which patients’ and their families’ opinion of NHS hospitals can be shared and fed back to the relevant decision makers. Hospitals and Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) can subscribe to the service in order to post responses to patients’ comments on the website, and to gain access to data on their performance.

The website contains comments and information about individual hospitals and staff, and is written in an easily accessible style. Although the site has many users, the number of trusts covered is so large that for many of the hospitals or services the number of reviews is too low to get an overall picture of performance.

As a model for online participation and responsiveness, Patient Opinion is a great example, but it needs to be developed further in terms of promoting proactive usage amongst both patients and PCTs.
